Southern Nevada’s Second Operation Medicine Cabinet to Collect Expired and Unused Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs

LAS VEGAS -- Following the overwhelming success of Southern Nevada’s first Operation Medicine Cabinet event in February, University of Southern Nevada’s Drug Abuse Awareness team (USN-DAAT) and a coalition of local organizations have come together for a second event to collect unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs from the public.

Operation Medicine Cabinet is presented by the University of Southern Nevada Drug Abuse Awareness Team, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Narcotics Education Foundation of Nevada, Clark County Coroner’s Office, Pain in the Drain and 8 News Now. James Lee Witt Named Senior Advisor at Zimek Technologies, Industry Leader in Infection Control and Biohazard Remediation

Zimek Technologies ( www.zimek.com ) is pleased to announce today the addition of James Lee Witt, Chief Executive Officer of Witt Associates, as Senior Advisor at Zimek, the industry leader in infection control and biohazard remediation systems. Witt was Cabinet-level Director of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) during the Clinton Administration.

Adipose tissue—commonly referred to as “fat”—is the human body's richest known source of stem cells. Adult Stem Cells are found in several areas of the body, but with Adipose-derived Stem Cells by far holding the most healing potential. For therapeutic purposes peripheral blood contains about 10,000 stem cells per treatment. Bone marrow contains about 50,000 adult stem cells. By comparison stem cells directly obtained from adipose tissue (Fat) yields and incredible 10 to 60 million stem cells per treatment. These are the highly desirable Mesenchymal Stromal Stem Cells capable of morphing into various cell types that repair the body.Operation Medicine CabinetAbout International Stem Cell InstituteBob Mazza 310-994-4847 mazzaefx@earthlink.netIn the procedure adipose tissue is removed from the patient using mini-liposuction, and processed with a combination of PRP (platelet rich plasma) and low laser light. Four hours later literally tens of millions of the patient’s own newly activated stem and regenerative cells are administered back into the body and immediately begin working. ISCI utilizes the AdiStem technology, AdiStem is the world’s leading provider of Autologous Adipose-derived Adult Stem Cell products and procedures. "ISCI’s Adipose Stem Cell Therapy treatment is a major advancement in disease care," says Alexander. “There’s no doubt the most exciting frontier in medicine now is adult stem cell therapy derived from fat. This is going to completely change the way patients are treated over the course of their lives and how we look at disease in the human body. Since ISCI is dedicated to providing patients worldwide with the best therapy available, we are no longer offering treatments with placenta stem cells. Current studies and reports from the doctors we work with indicate that Adipose Stem Cell Therapy is without doubt the most advanced form of stem cell therapy and has the greatest positive effects on a variety of degenerative diseases and medical conditions.”

Oesterman says misusing and abusing these drugs can be extremely dangerous. “Most people, particularly youth, are either unaware of or not concerned with the potential chemical dangers of these drugs,” said Oesterman. “There are varying strengths, side-effects and interactions to consider when taking medications that aren’t prescribed to you by a doctor or are simply misused. Unfortunately, the result can be great bodily harm or even death.”Witt's firm recently joined the support and recovery operations of Gulf Coast communities in the wake of the oil and gas spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Witt currently serves as a Special Advisor to the State of Louisiana, assisting with the nation's largest long-term recovery effort in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.Witt Associates, a public safety and crisis management consulting firm based in Washington D.C., focuses on disaster recovery and mitigation management services to state and local governments, educational institutions, the international community and corporations. An industry pioneer, ISCI is currently scheduling patients for treatment, especially those suffering from Parkinson’s disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Alzheimer’s, Myocardial ischemia, Lupus, MS, stroke, Diabetes type 1 and type 2, ALS, COPD, and spinal cord injuries and a host of autoimmune related conditions – illnesses which affect hundreds of thousands of patients in the United States alone. Patients receive their own Adult Stem and Regenerative Cells, thereby avoiding the risk of rejection or disease transmission that exists with donor stem cells and the controversy associated with embryonic stem cells. Once introduced these cells show an amazing ability to help heal the body’s organs and tissues, in addition to improving blood supplies and circulation to the diseased organs and tissues."Zimek Technologies is thrilled to have James Lee Witt join our team," stated Kurt Grosman, CEO of Zimek. "Having Mr. Witt onboard is a testament to the effectiveness of our products and the need for stronger decontamination protocols. He will provide unprecedented leadership in the growth of our company." Zimek's sophisticated three-dimensional touch-less decontamination technology is being implemented in many facilities nationwide to effectively prevent the spread of deadly viruses and bacteria.SAN DIEGO -- International Stem Cell Institute (http://www.iStemCelli.com), a worldwide leader in Stem Cell Therapy, today announces the launch of its significant and proprietary Adipose-derived Adult Stem Cell Therapy program, declaring it an extremely effective solution to treat degenerative diseases and conditions. Scientists and medical researchers worldwide are finding adult stem cells have an almost magical ability to heal the human body, and the supporting scientific evidence is rapidly mounting. The FDA recently approved Geron Corporation and University of California at Irvine to conduct trials utilizing embryonic stem cells in patients with spinal cord injuries. However after ten years of rigorous testing and research on embryonic stem cells, scientists have still not been able to treat or cure any diseases. By comparison, adult stem cells continue to show their ability to successfully treat human disease and injury, while embryonic stem cells continue to demonstrate zero benefits for humans, and only limited results in animal models. It’s now widely accepted Adult Stem Cells hold the real key to curing diseases and medical conditions and are the future direction of medicine. ISCI’s treatments—based solely on Adult Stem Cells—utilize leading edge technologies, and hold immediate promise for patients suffering from many forms of degenerative diseases. The first 25 families with children and/or teens will receive a free Rx DrugSAFE™ fingerprint home medicine safe, which provides a secure, convenient solution to safeguard prescription medications. Twelfth-graders had the highest likelihood of prescription drug abuse, at 26 percent.Zimek Technologies, based in Tampa, Florida, has been developing and marketing its patented automatic Micro-Mist® decontamination technologies for more than five years. Zimek's industry-leading technologies are used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, fire and EMS departments, healthcare facilities, public health agencies, transit systems, correctional facilities, and local law enforcement agencies across America.Operation Medicine Cabinet is presented by the University of Southern Nevada Drug Abuse Awareness Team, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Narcotics Education Foundation of Nevada, Clark County Coroner’s Office, Pain in the Drain and 8 News Now. "Our Adipose Stem Cell Therapy program maximizes the healing potential of your own body. It's not just harvesting the stem cells, but how those stem cells are prepared and activated which impacts the in vivo therapeutic effect, that’s why our Adipose Stem Cell Therapy program is completely different from anything else available today,” claims Alexander."There must be a stronger focus on prevention of infection, not just remediation after the infection occurs," Witt added. "Decontamination can play a larger role in our efforts to combat deadly viral and bacterial infections, and is giving us a powerful new tool in the arsenal to fight biohazard attacks."

Bathroom Storage That Works

The right size drawer combined with wise cabinet planning can solve any bathroom storage need

“The American Medicine Chest 5-step challenge will help save the lives of our children,” Valente said. “The steps include taking inventory of your medicine, securing your medicine chest, taking medicine only as prescribed by your doctor, disposing unused, unwanted, and expired medicine, and most importantly, talking to your children about the dangers of prescription drugs.”American College of Emergency Physicians president, Sandra Schneider, MD, FACEP, also an AMCC sponsor said, “Prescription drugs are the most abused drugs in America other than marijuana, and parents are the first line of defense between kids and the prescription medications.”AMCC is also being supported by the Partnership at DrugFree.org, Generic Pharmaceutical Association, and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association.AMCC is based on the success of the nationally recognized Operation Medicine Cabinet New Jersey (OMC-NJ) that was featured in the 2010 Drug Strategy of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.AMCC was created to help American families see their medicine cabinets through new eyes – as an access point for potential misuse and abuse of over-the-counter and prescription medicine by young people and to provide an opportunity to properly dispose of unused, unwanted, and expired medicines and encourage families to take the five step American Medicine Chest Challenge, explained Angelo M. Valente, Chief Executive Officer of AMCC.Storage tipsHealth bosses say it is important to help the NHS focus resources by treating simple ailments sensibly.Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used for a temperature caused by coughs, cold and flu, and also for relief from earache, stomach ache, sore throats, general aches and sprains. Anti-diarrhoea and re-hydration mixtures are also good for adults if they have an upset stomach.Dr Phil Jennings said, "Making sure you safely store some essentials will mean that you are better prepared. It will also mean that A&E, 999 and GP services have more time to deal with serious and life-threatening conditions."A mirror as a recessed medicine cabinet and a couple of drawers in a vanity just aren't enough anymore. Male or female, regardless of age, we use many personal care products. From babies to toddlers, tweeners to teenagers, kids have different personal care product needs than adults. As adults, we require everything from prescription medicines and vitamins to an endless variety of skin and hair care products. Don't forget the tools: hair dryer, curling irons, flat irons, electric shavers and on and on it goes. Add to the mix that in today's world most of us shop and purchase in quantity. The best example of this is the bale of toilet paper instead of the four-roll pack. Where is all of this stored in the bathrooms we see today?Create a linen cabinet that is 18 to 21 in. deep with a mix of shallow to deep roll-out trays and full-depth shelving. These shallow roll- o ut trays are great for vitamins, prescription medicines, first aid and any small items. Deep roll- outs are great for bulkier items like oversized bottles of personal care products. Small hand and facial towels can be rolled instead of folded for easier use. The full- depth shelves in an 18 to 21 in. deep linen cabinet will allow for most towels to be stored in half-fold as opposed to a triple fold thereby allowing for more towel storage. The mounting heights of the roll- out trays can be located based on the user's need. This is a consideration if someone in the household uses a wheelchair or has limited physical abilities.Point-of-use storage. Recessed niches at multiple heights and locations in the shower enclosure can accommodate users of any age or ability. A toilet topper is one example of this type of storage, and can range from traditional to contemporary in styling and need only be deep enough to accommodate a roll of paper.

American Medicine Chest Challenge Raises Awareness of Prescription Drug Abuse

Thousands of communities in 36 states hold national day of awareness

These are found in the kitchen or a utility room, but depending on the style they can make excellent bins for laundry items. The California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) supports AMCC on their national initiative.According to Jeff Bond, Senior Vice President for State Government Affairs at PhRMA, an AMCC founding sponsor, “With prescription drug abuse on the rise, it is important to have safe solutions for consumer disposal of unused medicines in their own home or through a community program in order to avoid the possibility that someone steals or misuses that medication.”I love the contemporary bathrooms we see in homes today, and their beautiful lavatory bowls suspended in glass counter tops, or wall-hung units with exposed plumbing beneath; perfectly folded towels ready at a moment's notice; a ledge for toiletries and a bank of drawers for the small personal items we use each day. As beautiful as those bathrooms are, what do they really look like after a full morning of family members getting ready for the day?A 15- to 18-in.-deep cabinet with adjustable shelves; sounds too simple, yesi Consider this real-life example of a family with kids using a shared bathroom. Each child was assigned a "French shopping basket" to store all their personal items. After they used the bathroom, all their items went back into the basket, which was put away on their designated shelf in the cabinet.

It's not about the length of time that you give yourself, rather it's about knowing that you have that time to yourself to get something done for you that makes you feel recharged and relaxed. If you're like Sarah and "ignore" the scheduled time more than three times in a row, then find yourself someone else to commit to meeting and set up some time to just hang out with them (or go for a run together, or meet for brunch, etc.).Royal Victoria Infirmary, Minor Injuries Unit. I look at that period as an opportunity to fit in "me" time, so that one hour each day is time for me to exercise, get a haircut, read a book, or just snooze on the couch. It's my hour and it's non-negotiable and guilt-free. Seven tips to prepare for life to return to normal as children head back to school

Thirty-one of 75 patients hospitalized for opioid detoxification told University at Buffalo physicians they first got hooked on drugs legitimately prescribed for pain. Another 24 began with a friend's left-over prescription pills or pilfered from a parent's medicine cabinet. The remaining 20 patients said they got hooked on street drugs. The transition into a new school year after three months of lazy relaxation is usually met with reluctance, anxiety, anticipation and excitement, but these tips can help make the transition a smooth, relaxed and fun one.

Duane Reade offers samples

NEW YORK -- Duane Reade highlighted its natural skin care offerings when it gave out Balm Innovations' Omnibalm 13% tea tree oil skin relief cream this spring.

Omnibalm is a multipurpose topical that "works on everything that ails your skin from head to toe," including sunburn, bug bites, dry and cracked skin, minor burns, cold sores, poison ivy, and even tired and sore feet, according to Balm Innovations. However, 92 percent of the patients in the study said they eventually bought drugs off the street, primarily heroin, because it is less expensive and more effective than prescriptions. They continued using drugs because they "helped to take away my emotional pain and stress," "to feel normal," "to feel like a better person."From June 3 to June 5 customers at 20 Duane Reade stores in the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens received samples of the cream while supplies lasted.LOS ANGELES -- The summer months have waned and back-to-school season is here. While exciting, this time of the year can be anxiety-inducing for children and parents alike. Here are a few tips to make the transition a smooth one and get the new school year off to a good start.

The cream, which retails for $12.99, is available at Duane Reade chainwide.

Study: prescriptions pave way to street drug addiction

If you want to know how people become addicted and why they keep using drugs, ask the people who are addicted.

A zest for marketing medicine to women

Pair's flair for pharma provides lift for a product that flopped in startup's hands

Take each twice daily with food at first onset of cold symptoms."It's not that they're not buying things," Jaensch said. "But there isn't a whole lot to buy, and there hasn't been anything that's worked, until Zestra."ConclusionThat August, a bankruptcy judge declared Scherl and Jaensch the new owners of their own biotech company. Scherl said the acquisition process was a whirlwind experience.10. Your Refrigerator As an Extension of Your Medicine CabinetThe numbers are shocking: According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)1 approximately seven million Americans - 2.8 percent of the U.S. population - currently abuse prescription pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. Young people are particularly vulnerable: The Partnership for a DrugFree America reports that, every day, 2,500 American teenagers try a prescription drug for the first time to get high. Second only to marijuana, seven of the most prevalently abused drugs among teens are prescription medications used recreationally. Types range from narcotic painkillers such as Vicodin and OxyContin to Adderall, a stimulant commonly prescribed to treat attention deficit disorder (NIDA, Monitoring the Future "Drug Use Among 12'1' Graders," 2009).Do you use Tylenol but for the rare headache? If so, check your medicine cabinet for recalled products. The Tylenol recall of 2010 has extended to include some Zyrtec, Benadryl, aspirin, Rolaids, and Motrin products. The reason for the recall is sometimes-severe gastrointestinal symptoms from moldy-smelling 2,4,6-tribromoanisole, a contaminant that entered the products from the wooden pallets used to transport packaging material. Discard the products, or confirm the recall at 888-222-6036 or McNeilProductRecall.com. Removing these products from shelves around the world--Antartic research stations, emergency boxes, and home medicine cabinets--requires worldwide participation.* grape seed extract 100 mgA second public health concern involving Tylenol or any other acetaminophen-containing products is liver damage. Acetaminophen is the most common cause of medication-related liver damage. Children are at risk because of their small size and because they may unintentionally receive double doses when Tylenol is combined with cough and cold products that contain acetaminophen among the active ingredients. Be vigilant of acetaminophen that is "hidden" in prescription and over-the-counter medications.Adele C. Oliva, a partner at Quaker, said Scherl and Jaensch were well positioned to refocus and revive the company and its lead product."I thought raising money and buying the assets out of bankruptcy had to be harder than running it," she said. "When you cross the finish line, you sort of don't remember what it was like when you weren't running."7. The Epsom Salts Comeback4. Safe HandlingSo instead of joining Zestra Labs, the pair started pondering a different idea: buy the company. In May 2008, they began seriously exploring the possibility, which became more tantalizing a month later, when Zestra declared bankruptcy. The pair partnered with Quaker Bio Ventures, a Pennsylvaniabased venture capital firm, and lined up a bid of $2.5 million.1. Tylenol Recall 2010* curcumin, 400 mgHow widespread is the problem? Dubbed the "hidden epidemic," abuse of prescription and OTC medications knows no geographic boundaries. Data from the Department of Health and Human Services study Nonmedicai Use of Pain Relievers in Substate Regions: 2004 to 2006 revealed abuse rates of between 2.48 and 7.92 percent in all 50 states. Surprisingly, the data indicated that community size has little beating on the statistics. Abuse rates in certain swaths of America's Heartland were as high or higher than those of New York City and Los Angeles. In contrast, the District of Columbia boasted one of the nation's lowest percentages of abusers.Community feedback from September 25 has been so positive that jurisdictions are considering future events. Sheriff Kelly, for one, reports that Clark County is already considering a second take-back day for spring 20 1 1 . In early October, Congress cleared legislation that will allow the DEA to create a framework for a permanent solution for prescription drug disposal. Until permanent regulations are in place, the DEA will continue to sponsor take-back programs.

Rethinking your medicine cabinet's cold and flu products

Introduction

"I had looked at a lot of things in the women's health area, and felt that the marketing opportunity was substantial," Oliva said. "The product clearly worked based on the clinical data - and you had a strong and dynamic leadership team."* quercetin 600 mgScherl became the company's president; Jaensch, its CEO. The pair named the new venture Semprae Laboratories Inc., and moved its offices to Saddle Brook. They launched a major overhaul of the product - a topically applied blend of botanical oils - and developed a new flavor, package, website and message.Stock your shelves with minerals. Mineral-containing water is like bugs and sunlight, essential for our survival and usually overlooked, even though life emerged from the mineral-rich sea and all biology remains tied to it. One practical, inexpensive, in-home source of two minerals, magnesium and sulfur, is Epsom salts. Don't use salt baths only for the occasional strained muscle; consider them a mineral source worth soaking in to help relieve the muscle aches of cold and flu symptoms. Just as salts leave the skin in the form of sweat, they can enter the body through the skin.by Ingrid kohlstadt MD, MPHThe company's marketing events also are a major platform to push its drug. Most drugs languish in medicine cabinets simply because people don't know how to properly dispose of them. Many hesitate to flush pills down the toilet for fear of contaminating the water supply, while others worry that trashed medications will fall into the hands of children or criminals. By participating in National Take-Back Day, citizens gained peace of mind knowing that their medications would be turned over to law enforcement for safe disposal.Storage conditions matter. While most medications if kept in a cool, dry place are adequately potent beyond the labeled date, products not stored under these conditions expire sooner. Sometimes overlooked conditions include: products stored in a bathroom used for steamy showers; added to a day bag left in a hot car; or kept in a kitchen cabinet over the stove. Heat and moisture cause damage.9. Phytonutrient CapsulesThough a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed 43 percent of women reported sexual dysfunction, the market for female sexual enhancement products is virtually empty, while the male medicine cabinet is stocked with options like Viagra or Cialis.Start an autumnal equinox ritual: check your medicine cabinet by September 22 each year. Use your cabinet to prepare for the cold and flu season. Even better, include prevention. Here's a 10-item list to assist you in your new celestially linked tradition.Semprae has yet to reach turn a profit, but the owners hope to reach that benchmark next year. They now have 10 fulltime employees and 1 part-timer, as well as two full-time consultants. They're also working on different flavor and viscosity adjustments to Zestra, and an airless pump bottle version. Semprae also seeks other products to fold into its channel. So when a struggling startup called the pair in the spring of 2008, seeking help selling Zestra - its over-the-counter female arousal product - the pair instantly knew there was potential. So now that you have cleared the medicine cabinet, what should you put in? If you don't live in the tropics, stock bottled sunlight, so to speak. Vitamin D helps the body resist cold symptoms. At the first sign of cold symptoms, some people reach for their vitamin D supplements, taking 3000 IU a day for 3 days. The science of immune-system benefits from vitamin D may be new, but the benefits of heliotherapy (harnessing the sun's energy for vitamin D synthesis) for fighting infections dates back centuries. Also keep in mind that the first cranial nerve which "hardwires" our sense of smell is especially vulnerable to any chemicals entering the nostrils and sinuses, even if we are too congested at the time to notice the chemicals. The equinox is also the time to reinitiate a vitamin D supplement, since in most of the US the sun's ultraviolet light no longer has enough punch by October. You can store the vitamin D summer harvest. However, safe summer sun exposure and supplementation alone are not always sufficient to sustain vitamin D in the 32-60 ng/ml range associated with optimal cold and flu-fighting health. Adding viramin D to a midwinter blood draw may be prudent for prevention.Disclaimer: The views expressed in this article are her own and do not necessarily reflect the views of the FDA.Stepping up efforts to combat prescription drug abuse in America, the Office of National Drug Control Policy recently released the 2010 National Drug Control Strategy, which outlined plans for "curbing prescription drug abuse by. . .encouraging community prescription take-back initiatives... [and] recommending disposal methods to remove unused medications from the home...." In support of the plan, the National Sheriffs' Association, National Association of Triads, and a total of 2,992 state and local law enforcement agencies took part in the first-ever U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration-coordinated National Take-Back Day. Hailed by DEA Acting Administrator Michele M. Leonhart a "stunning nationwide success," the September 25 event netted more than 121 tons of medication from 4,094 nationwide collection sites, where citizens were encouraged to turn over expired and unneeded medications of all types, no questions asked. Some probiotics, oils, and nutritional supplements require refrigeration upon opening. So in a practical way, your refrigerator should be part of your medicine cabinet. Go beyond that and include healing foods. Elderberry and blueberry juices have antiviral activity, and only a small amount of sugar. Drink two 4-ounce glasses (diluted to 8 ounces) daily with the onset of cold symptoms. Ginger rood stored in the freezer can be easily grated to make tea or flavor food, to help reduce cold symptoms. Greens improve the body's acid--base balance, critical to fighting viruses and bacteria. Alternatives to fresh greens are herbs, frozen wheat grass juice, and unsweetened powdered greens drinks. Keep oral rehydration salts on hand as well, or some frozen homemade chicken soup. The product comes in discreet packaging, and saves the customers the trouble of going to the store for a refill. It also means an automatic repeat customer, unless the customer cancels online, though Jaensch and Scherl believe most women won't: In a clinical trial, 70 percent of participants reported increased sexual satisfaction.Salt-containing nasal sprays are a good choice for early signs of cold. Keep several on hand because they should be used by only one person and only for a few days.E-mail to: jkaltwasser@njbiz.com6. Probiotics Especially for ChildrenOils of mint, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and other plants can be applied to the skin or added to water for steam inhalation. I recommend plant oils over petroleum derivatives such as Vaseline, Vicks VapoRub, and A D ointment (named for the fat-soluble vitamins that it contains), because we take in the oil-based plant nutrients through skin and linings.Ingrid Kohlstadt, MD, MPH, is an FDA Commissioner's Fellow, using diet to improve drug safety. She has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition and is an associate at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. She is the founder and chief medical officer of INGRIDients Inc., editing Food and Nutrients in Disease Management (CRC Press, 2009) and Scientific Evidence for Musculoskeletal, Bariatric and Sports Nutrition (CRC Press, 2006).Clark County alone set up five dropoff points. During the four-hour event, Lieutenant Donald Lucas of the Law Enforcement Division and Sergeant Ralph Underwood of the Community Services Division collected 4,600 bottles containing 25,000 pills. "Eight hundred and two people came out to our five locations, and the community was very pleased. I received phone messages saying how courteous the deputies were," said Sheriff Kelly.Certain seemingly innocuous overthe-counter (OTC) medications also represent a cheap, easy-to-obtain high for young abusers. Five percent of teenagers recently surveyed admitted to having experimented with OTC cough suppressants in the past year. Remedies such as Robitussin contain the active ingrethent dextromethorphan (DXM), which, while safe and effective when used as directed, can cause seizures, brain damage, or even death if taken in excess. Typically, young "syrup heads" chug 25 to 50 times the recommended dose to achieve the effects DXM produces.2. Pediatric Acetaminophen-Containing ProductsOliva, who also serves on Semprae's board, said she's pleased with the company's direction.* olive leaf extract, 500 mg"They've come up with the right positioning for the product, the right messaging," she said. "With limited dollars, they're really focused in their targeting" of customers. So how do you safely discard medications? Flushing them down the toilet prevents unintentional ingestion or later untoward uses, but it also can present an environmental hazard. One choice is to return them to the pharmacy where they were purchased. Another choice, depending on the medication, is to discard them in the trash out of harmful reach. Keep in mind that some medications, especially those with abuse potential, have an illegal market and a following of enterprising scavengers.Jaensch and Scherl, who both got their start in pharmaceuticals, were partners at the time at their own marketing and consulting firm, The Jannick G roup/ SPARK Solutions for Growth. They were impressed by the product, but the company that made it - South Carolina-based Zestra Laboratories - was collapsing under a heap of debt brought on by an over-the-top, underperforming commercialization strategy.Jaensch and Scherl also redesigned the company's distribution model, de-emphasizing retail sales - though the product is still on shelves at places like Walmart and Rite Aid - in favor of Internet-based sales, emphasizing an automatic refill model. Customers who purchase Zestra online receive 12 single-use packages of the product; every two months, another 12 automatically are delivered.

Cleaning Out the Medicine Chest: A Nationwide Initiative Is Launched to Combat Prescription Drug Abuse

From covering electric outlets to installing safety gates, new parents often child-proof their homes months before baby has even learned to crawl. Shielding one's children from danger is a natural instinct, yet, as infants grow into teenagers and young adults, many parents let down their guard when it comes to in-home safety. Increasingly, otherwise vigilant moms and dads (and often grandparents) are unwittingly providing easy opportunities for substance abuse simply by not monitoring the bathroom medicine cabinet.

Here's wishing you a season without a need to open your medicine cabinet following your equinox preparations. Please send comments and checklist additions to Ingrid@Ingridients.com.5. Vitamin DRACHEL BRAUN SCHERL and Mary Wallace Jaensch have spent their entire careers helping big-name companies understand how to market products to female consumers.3. A Context for Expiration DatesShelve healthful bacteria. Intestinal bugs are a lot like the sun, essential for our survival and usually overlooked (by those other than Townsend Letter subscribers!). Among their many functions, the microbes that live in our linings help protect us from virus infections. Probiotics taken daily may be especially helpful for young children, in addition to a daily serving of yogurt, kefir, or other fermented dairy."There were a couple of events in the predecessor company's history where the product shows had such an unbelievable response," she said. "Even now, the most powerful communication we have is a PR event.Harvest some plant energy. Phytonutrients exert strong influences on the human immune system, which is the reason that some phytonutrients have been developed into anticancer and antiallergy medicines. Most of our phytonutrients should come from eating a plant-based diet. However, with onset of cold and flu symptoms, supplemental phytonutrients offer added benefit. My top 4 phytonutrients for the medicine cabinet are:8. Healing OilsSheriff Gene A. Kelly of Clark County, Ohio (population 140,000) describes the effects of prescription drug abuse on small-town America: "We recently made arrests at several high schools and a middle school for students selling, trading, and giving away prescription medications to other students. We also recently arrested two young women for abusing Fentanyl patches." According to Sheriff Kelly, prescription drug abuse impacts every neighborhood and often is the catalyst for other crimes. "We have had multiple reports of home contractors asking to use the restroom and then stealing medications or coming back later to commit burglary. These could have resulted in very violent confrontations."

Community feedback from September 25 has been so positive that jurisdictions are considering future events. Sheriff Kelly, for one, reports that Clark County is already considering a second take-back day for spring 20 1 1 . Pfizer slaps Tylenol with Advil ads, giveaway

PFIZER TOOK AIM at Johnson & Johnson's Tylenol franchise with a campaign offering free Advil and urging consumers to clean out their medicine cabinets and trash recalled drugs.

Officials said the event was designed to provide citizens with a safe and easy way to dispose of their medications to help reduce the growing national epidemic of prescription-drug abuse and environmental contamination due to improper disposal.By Staff Sgt Andrew H.
